Google Home Not Responding? Diagnose the Problem

If Google Home is not responding, the cause may be as simple as a muted microphone or a temporary power problem, but Wi-Fi, device placement, software updates and Google Home app issues can also be involved.

The first thing to establish is what happens when you say “Hey Google.” If the device lights up and listens but doesn’t answer, that’s a different problem from a speaker that shows no sign of hearing you at all. And if Google Home works but says it can’t connect to the internet, there’s no reason to start changing microphone or Voice Match settings.

Use the symptoms below to narrow down the problem before moving on to more involved troubleshooting.

Why This Happens

A Google Home or Nest speaker can stop responding for several different reasons:

  • The microphone has been switched off.
  • The speaker has lost power or is not receiving power correctly.
  • The device has lost its Wi-Fi connection.
  • Your router or internet connection is having problems.
  • The speaker is having difficulty hearing the wake word.
  • A temporary software or device problem is preventing the Assistant from responding.
  • The device is installing an update.
  • The Google Home app is having trouble communicating with the speaker.
  • The speaker needs to be reset and set up again.

Google’s current troubleshooting guidance starts with power, microphone status and whether the device reacts to “Hey Google,” followed by restarting the speaker and checking its connection.

Fix 1: Check Whether Google Home Is Powered On

Before troubleshooting Wi-Fi or the Google Home app, check the basics.

Make sure the speaker is connected firmly to its power adapter and that the adapter is plugged into a working wall outlet.

If the device appears completely dead:

  1. Disconnect the power cable.
  2. Wait about 10 seconds.
  3. Plug it back in.
  4. Give the speaker time to start up.
  5. Try saying “Hey Google.”

Google specifically recommends unplugging the speaker and waiting before reconnecting it when troubleshooting setup and device problems.

If the lights return after reconnecting the power, wait for the startup sequence to finish before testing the Assistant.

Don’t immediately assume a dark or unresponsive device has failed. A loose connection, outlet problem or temporary startup issue can produce the same symptom.

Fix 2: Check Whether the Microphone Is Muted

If your Google Home has orange lights, check the physical microphone control.

On Google Home, the microphone mute button is on the back of the speaker. On Nest Mini and Nest Audio models, the microphone switch is located on the device.

When the microphone is turned off, Google Assistant can’t hear “Hey Google” or respond to voice commands.

Turn the microphone back on and try again.

This is one of the easiest problems to overlook because the speaker can remain powered on and connected while the microphone is physically disabled.

Google’s current light-status documentation identifies orange indicators as a microphone-off state on supported Google Home and Nest speakers. Google Support

What if the lights aren’t orange?

Say:

“Hey Google, what’s the weather?”

Watch the device while speaking.

If the speaker shows its normal listening response, it is detecting the wake word. If nothing happens, continue with the next checks.

Fix 3: Check Whether Google Home Hears You but Doesn’t Answer

There is an important difference between Google Home not hearing you and Google Home hearing you but not completing the request.

Try a very simple command:

“Hey Google, what time is it?”

Then try another basic question.

If the lights indicate that the Assistant heard you but there is no spoken response, try asking the same question in a slightly different way.

Google also recommends trying another wording when the Assistant answers some requests but not a particular question.

If simple commands work but more complicated ones don’t, the speaker itself may not be the problem.

If nothing gets a response, continue with the restart and connection checks.

Fix 4: Check the Internet Connection

Google Home needs an active network connection for many Assistant requests.

Test your home Wi-Fi using your phone or another device.

If your phone also has trouble accessing the internet, the problem may be with the router or broadband connection rather than Google Home.

If other devices work normally, check the Google Home device in the Google Home app.

You can also move the speaker closer to the router temporarily.

This is particularly useful when Google Home works in one location but becomes unreliable after being moved to another room.

Don’t confuse Wi-Fi with internet access

Your Google Home can be connected to your router while your internet connection itself is unavailable.

That’s why testing another device on the same network is useful.

If several devices have suddenly lost internet access, restart the router before changing anything on the speaker.

Fix 5: Restart Google Home

If Google Home was working normally and suddenly stopped responding, restart it before changing settings.

Disconnect the speaker’s power cable.

Wait around 10 seconds, then reconnect it.

Allow the device to finish starting up.

Then say:

“Hey Google, what time is it?”

A restart is different from a factory reset. It doesn’t erase your Google Home configuration.

Google’s troubleshooting instructions recommend rebooting the speaker when the Assistant isn’t responding.

If restarting fixes the problem but it keeps happening again later, don’t keep repeating the restart indefinitely. Move on to the Wi-Fi and software checks.

Fix 6: Reconnect the Speaker After a Wi-Fi Change

Did you recently:

  • Change your Wi-Fi password?
  • Replace your router?
  • Change the Wi-Fi network name?
  • Move the speaker to another location?
  • Change your router settings?

If so, the Google Home device may no longer have the correct network information.

Open the Google Home app and check whether the speaker is showing as online.

If the device is offline, follow the app’s connection or setup instructions to reconnect it.

Google’s current troubleshooting guidance specifically identifies a new router, changed Wi-Fi name or changed password as common reasons a Google smart speaker can go offline.

If the speaker cannot connect during setup, keep your phone reasonably close to the speaker while completing the process. Google currently recommends keeping the setup device within about 5–20 feet of the speaker and having it on the same Wi-Fi environment during setup.

Fix 7: Check Whether Google Home Is Updating

Sometimes a Google Home speaker may appear unresponsive because it is installing an update.

Google says its smart speakers and displays can update automatically. During an update, the device won’t respond to questions or complete normal Assistant tasks.

The update typically takes up to about 10 minutes.

During this process, the lights can show an update pattern rather than the normal listening or responding behaviour.

If the speaker is clearly showing an update sequence, give it time to finish rather than unplugging it repeatedly.

If it remains in an update state far longer than expected, then move on to Google’s update troubleshooting steps.

Fix 8: Factory Reset Google Home Only as a Last Resort

If Google Home still doesn’t respond after checking power, microphone status, Wi-Fi, restarting the speaker and allowing updates to finish, a factory reset may be the next step.

But don’t reset it simply because one voice command isn’t working.

A factory reset removes the device’s configuration and requires you to set it up again.

More importantly, the reset procedure differs between Google Home, Nest Mini, Nest Audio, Nest Hub and other models.

Google’s current documentation provides model-specific reset procedures, so identify your exact device before attempting one. Google Support

After the reset, you’ll need to add the device to the Google Home app and configure it again.

How to Prevent Google Home From Becoming Unresponsive

A few simple habits can reduce recurring problems:

  • Keep the speaker within reliable Wi-Fi range.
  • Avoid placing it in an enclosed cabinet or directly behind other objects.
  • Keep the microphone switch enabled when you want voice control.
  • Don’t unplug the device repeatedly while it is installing an update.
  • Keep your Google Home app updated.
  • Restart the speaker when it develops temporary connection problems.
  • If multiple smart-home devices go offline together, investigate the router before resetting individual devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Google Home not responding to “Hey Google”?

First check whether the microphone is muted and whether the speaker is powered on. If the microphone is enabled, restart the speaker and check its Wi-Fi connection.

Why does my Google Home have orange lights?

On supported Google Home and Nest speakers, orange lights indicate that the microphone is turned off. Turn the physical microphone control back on and try “Hey Google” again.

Why does Google Home hear me but not answer?

If the speaker reacts to “Hey Google” but doesn’t provide an answer, try a simple question and then another command. If the problem affects every request, restart the speaker and check its internet connection.

Why did Google Home stop working after I changed my Wi-Fi password?

The speaker may still have the previous network credentials. Open the Google Home app and reconnect the device to the current Wi-Fi network.

How long should I wait if Google Home is updating?

Google says updates typically take up to around 10 minutes. If the speaker is showing an update light pattern, allow the process to finish before interrupting power.

Does unplugging Google Home reset it?

No. Unplugging and reconnecting the speaker performs a restart. It does not normally erase the device’s configuration.

Should I factory reset Google Home if it isn’t responding?

Only after simpler troubleshooting has failed. A factory reset removes the device’s configuration and requires you to set it up again.
