Smart Bulb Keeps Flickering? Fix Blinking and Flashing Lights

A smart bulb that keeps flickering can be distracting, especially when it is supposed to provide steady lighting. You might notice brief flashes, repeated blinking, sudden changes in brightness, or a light that flickers even when its app shows it is switched on normally.

If your smart bulb keeps flickering, the cause may be an incompatible dimmer, an unstable power supply, a loose bulb connection, a control setting, or a fault in the bulb itself. The right fix depends on when the flickering happens and whether it affects one light or several.

Start with the simple checks below. If you notice a burning smell, buzzing accompanied by heat, sparks, a discolored socket, or repeated electrical tripping, switch off the affected circuit if it is safe to do so and seek help from a qualified electrician. Do not continue testing a potentially unsafe fixture.

Fix 1: Check Whether the Flickering Is an Intentional Light Signal

Before changing settings or replacing the bulb, observe its behavior.

Some smart bulbs flash or pulse during initial setup, pairing, resetting, firmware updates, or specific lighting effects. The exact behavior depends on the model.

Ask yourself:

  • Does the bulb flicker only when you first switch it on?
  • Does it blink repeatedly after a reset or during setup?
  • Does the flashing stop once the setup process finishes?
  • Does it flicker continuously during ordinary lighting?

If the flashing happens only during a documented setup process, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and allow the process to finish.

If the bulb continues flickering during normal use, or starts doing so unexpectedly after working correctly for weeks, do not assume it is in pairing mode. Continue with the checks below.

What success looks like: The bulb stops flashing after its intended setup or lighting effect ends. If it does not, investigate its power supply and operating conditions.

Fix 2: Check the Wall Switch, Dimmer and Lighting Controls

A smart bulb may not work reliably when connected to a conventional wall dimmer or another control that reduces the power supplied to it.

This is especially relevant if the flickering starts when you lower the brightness, use a wall-mounted dimmer, or switch between lighting levels.

Try this:

  1. Check whether the bulb is connected to a dimmer switch rather than a standard on/off switch.
  2. If a dimmer is present, consult the bulb manufacturer’s compatibility guidance before using it with the bulb.
  3. If the manufacturer recommends a standard on/off supply, use that arrangement only if the installation is designed for it and can be operated safely.
  4. If the bulb has an app-based brightness control, test it at a steady brightness without changing levels repeatedly.
  5. Check whether a scene, schedule or automation is repeatedly changing the light’s brightness.

Do not remove a wall dimmer, alter wiring or bypass electrical controls yourself. If the installation needs modification, have a qualified electrician assess it.

Also remember that a smart bulb generally needs continuous power to maintain its smart functions. Switching its wall control off can disconnect it, but that alone should not cause persistent flickering while the bulb is powered normally.

What success looks like: The bulb remains steady when used with compatible controls and without a scene or automation repeatedly changing its output.

Fix 3: Check the Bulb’s Fit and the Fixture

A bulb that is not seated correctly may have an unreliable electrical connection. A damaged holder, loose fixture component or worn socket can also cause unstable lighting.

First, switch the light off and allow the bulb to cool. If the fixture is safe to access, follow the manufacturer’s instructions to check that the bulb is correctly fitted. Do not touch exposed electrical contacts or work on live wiring.

If the bulb is removable:

  • Check whether it appears visibly damaged.
  • Confirm that it is the correct type and fitting for the fixture.
  • Reinstall it according to the manufacturer’s instructions, without overtightening.
  • Look for signs of damage, scorching or discoloration around the holder without dismantling the fixture.

If the socket is damaged, the bulb feels unusually hot, or you notice burning smells or sparking, stop using the fixture and contact an electrician.

If the bulb is enclosed in a shade or fitting, check the manufacturer’s guidance on whether the bulb is suitable for that type of enclosure. Heat can affect some bulbs, and not every model is designed for every fixture.

What success looks like: The bulb operates steadily in a suitable, undamaged fixture. If it still flickers, continue diagnosing the bulb and power supply.

Fix 4: Check Whether the Flickering Happens at Certain Brightness Levels

A bulb that flickers only at low brightness may have a different problem from one that flickers at every setting.

Use the bulb’s own app to test a few steady brightness levels:

  1. Set the bulb to a moderate brightness.
  2. Leave it there briefly and observe whether the light remains steady.
  3. Try a higher brightness, then a lower brightness.
  4. Note whether the flickering appears only at a particular level or color setting.

If flickering occurs only at very low brightness, the bulb’s dimming electronics or compatibility with the control arrangement may be involved. Some models also behave differently when producing particular colors or lighting effects.

Check whether the bulb’s app has an active scene, dynamic effect or automation that changes the output. Select a steady white-light setting and disable the effect temporarily if needed.

If the bulb flickers at every brightness level, do not assume the issue is simply a dimming setting. Check the fixture, power conditions and bulb condition as well.

If the light remains steady at other brightness levels but refuses to adjust properly, see our guide to fixing a smart bulb that is not dimming.

What success looks like: The bulb remains stable at normal settings. If a specific setting reliably triggers flickering, record it because it can help narrow down a compatibility or device fault.

Fix 5: Check Whether Other Lights Are Flickering Too

This is one of the most useful checks because it helps distinguish a problem with one smart bulb from a wider electrical issue.

Observe other lights in the same room. If appropriate, check whether lights in other rooms are affected too, without opening fixtures or electrical panels.

Use the results to narrow the problem:

  • Only one smart bulb flickers: The bulb, its fitting, its controls or its compatibility may be responsible.
  • Several bulbs in one fixture or room flicker: The shared control arrangement, fixture or local electrical supply may need inspection.
  • Lights in several rooms flicker together: The problem may involve the electrical supply or a wider circuit issue.

If several lights flicker at the same time, particularly when an appliance starts, or if the flickering is accompanied by unusual buzzing, burning smells, sparks or breaker trips, stop troubleshooting the smart-home app. Arrange a qualified electrical inspection.

Do not open a distribution board, tighten live connections or attempt electrical repairs yourself.

What success looks like: You can establish whether the fault is isolated to one bulb or affects other lighting. This determines whether further bulb-specific checks are sensible.

Fix 6: Test the Bulb in a Suitable Alternative Fixture

If the bulb still flickers, a comparison test may help establish whether the original fixture is contributing to the problem.

Only do this if the bulb is designed to be removable, the alternative fixture is compatible, and both can be accessed safely.

  1. Switch off the original light and allow the bulb to cool.
  2. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for removing it.
  3. Install it in a known-good fixture with the correct fitting and compatible electrical rating.
  4. Switch it on and observe its behavior under ordinary lighting conditions.

Do not use a fixture that is damaged, loose, unsuitable for the bulb or suspected of having an electrical fault.

Interpret the result carefully:

  • If the bulb flickers in both fixtures, the bulb itself or its operating compatibility becomes a stronger possibility.
  • If it works normally in the alternative fixture, the original fixture, dimmer or local electrical connection may be involved.
  • If the alternative fixture is also suspect, the test is inconclusive.

A successful test does not prove that the original fixture is safe. Have an electrician inspect it if the symptoms suggest an electrical fault.

What success looks like: The comparison gives you a clearer indication of whether the problem follows the bulb or stays with the original installation.

Fix 7: Check for a Bulb Fault and Decide When to Replace It

If the bulb flickers in a suitable fixture, with compatible controls and without active lighting effects, the bulb may have an internal fault.

Check whether the problem began after a power event, overheating, physical damage or a change in the fixture. These clues can help you describe the issue, but they do not establish the exact cause.

Before replacing the bulb:

  • Check the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance for your model.
  • Look for visible damage without opening the bulb.
  • Check the warranty or return eligibility if the bulb is relatively new.
  • Avoid dismantling the bulb or attempting internal electrical repairs.

A factory reset is not the first choice for a bulb that flickers during ordinary lighting. Resetting mainly addresses configuration and control problems; it may not resolve a faulty power supply, incompatible dimmer or damaged bulb.

If the bulb is still under warranty, contact the manufacturer or seller before attempting a reset that could remove configuration settings.

What success looks like: The manufacturer confirms a suitable next step, or replacing a confirmed faulty bulb resolves the problem. If a replacement bulb also flickers in the same fixture, investigate the fixture or electrical supply instead of repeatedly buying bulbs.

If Your Smart Bulb Still Keeps Flickering

If none of these checks resolves the issue, gather a few details before seeking help:

  • The bulb’s make and model.
  • Whether it flickers continuously or only at particular brightness levels.
  • Whether the light is connected to a wall dimmer.
  • Whether other lights are affected.
  • Whether the problem follows the bulb to a compatible alternative fixture.
  • Whether the flickering started after a power event, installation change or new lighting setting.

These details can help the manufacturer or electrician identify the right next step without unnecessary resets or repeated replacements.

If the flickering affects multiple lights, or there are signs of overheating or electrical damage, stop using the affected installation and seek professional help.

A smart bulb should provide stable lighting during ordinary operation. The most useful first step is to determine whether the flashing is intentional, linked to the controls, isolated to one bulb, or part of a wider electrical problem.
