Roku Not Connecting to Wi-Fi? Diagnose the Problem and Fix It

Roku not connecting to Wi-Fi? Before restarting everything or changing router settings, identify where the connection is actually failing. Is Roku unable to find your network, rejecting the Wi-Fi password, connecting to the router but not the internet, or losing the connection because of a weak signal?

That distinction matters because each situation has a different fix.

Before You Start: Check These Two Things

Check 1: Is Your Internet Working?

Connect a phone, laptop or another device to the same Wi-Fi network your Roku is trying to use.

Try opening a website.

If the other device also has no internet: focus on your modem, router or internet service first. The Roku may not be the problem.

If the other device works: continue below. Your internet is available, so the problem is more likely between the Roku and your network.

Roku also recommends checking the same network with another device when diagnosing connection problems.

Check 2: Run Roku’s Connection Check

If your Roku is already set up and you can access its menus, go to:

Settings → Network → Check connection

Roku checks the connection between the device and your network, as well as the network’s connection to the internet.

You can also open:

Settings → Network → About

to see information about the current connection.

GlitchWise Tip: Don’t factory-reset your Roku yet. A factory reset won’t repair an internet outage, incorrect Wi-Fi password or weak wireless signal.

Fix 1: Roku Can’t Find Your Wi-Fi Network

If your network name doesn’t appear when Roku searches for Wi-Fi, start by selecting:

Scan again to see all networks

Wait for Roku to complete another scan.

If your Wi-Fi still doesn’t appear, check whether a phone or another device can detect the same network from near the Roku.

Other devices can’t see the network either

This points toward the router or Wi-Fi network, rather than Roku.

Check that your router is powered on and broadcasting Wi-Fi. Restart the networking equipment if necessary and scan again.

Other devices can see Wi-Fi but Roku can’t

Now the Roku-specific possibilities become more relevant.

Check:

  • the distance between the Roku and router;
  • whether the wireless signal is weak;
  • whether the Roku model supports the network configuration you’re using; and
  • whether restarting the Roku and router makes the network appear.

Don’t start changing router channels yet. We’ll cover bands and channels under Advanced Troubleshooting.

Fix 2: Roku Finds Wi-Fi but Won’t Connect

If Roku can see your Wi-Fi but fails when connecting, check the network credentials first.

Make sure you’re selecting the correct network.

Then enter the Wi-Fi password again carefully.

Wi-Fi passwords are case-sensitive. Use Show password on Roku’s password screen to verify what you’ve entered before submitting it.

Getting Roku error 14.40 or 14.41?

These errors point specifically toward an incorrect Wi-Fi password in Roku’s current troubleshooting guidance.

In this situation, don’t factory-reset your Roku.

First verify:

Correct network → Correct password → Correct capitalization

If you’re certain the password is correct but Roku still won’t connect, restart the Roku and router before moving to the advanced network checks below.

Fix 3: Roku Is Connected to Wi-Fi but Has No Internet

This is different from Roku being unable to connect to Wi-Fi.

Your Roku can successfully communicate with the router even when the router itself cannot reach the internet.

Test another phone or computer on the same Wi-Fi network.

Other devices don’t have internet either

The problem is probably outside the Roku.

Try:

  1. Restarting your modem/router.
  2. Waiting for the internet connection to fully return.
  3. Testing the connection again on another device.
  4. Checking your ISP’s service status if the connection remains unavailable.

Other devices have internet but Roku doesn’t

Restart the Roku.

Go to:

Settings → System → Power → System restart

On models without the Power submenu, System restart may appear directly under System.

After the Roku restarts, run:

Settings → Network → Check connection

again.

Fix 4: Roku Wi-Fi Is Weak or Keeps Disconnecting

A Roku can technically connect to Wi-Fi while still having a poor-quality connection.

You might notice:

  • frequent buffering;
  • apps taking a long time to load;
  • videos stopping unexpectedly;
  • repeated connection drops; or
  • Roku reporting poor wireless strength.

Check:

Settings → Network → About

and look at the wireless connection information.

Test the Roku closer to your router

If possible, temporarily reduce the distance between the Roku and router.

Walls, floors and other physical obstacles can weaken wireless signals. Interference and congested Wi-Fi networks can also affect connection quality.

If the problem disappears when the devices are closer together, you’ve learned something important:

The Roku itself may be working correctly; the problem is more likely the Wi-Fi signal reaching it.

Roku currently associates error codes such as 016 and 017 with weak wireless signal conditions.

Check Your Roku Wi-Fi Error Code

If Roku displays an error number, use it before trying random fixes.

Roku errorWhat it can indicateCheck first
009Roku can’t reach the internetRouter/internet connection
14.40 / 14.41Incorrect Wi-Fi passwordRe-enter password
14.20 / 14.62 / 14.64Signal/connectivity problemWi-Fi signal/network
016 / 017Weak Wi-Fi signalRouter distance/signal
018Slow internet connectionInternet speed/quality
003Unable to updateInternet/update connection

Important: Don’t treat every 14-series error as the same problem. The exact error number helps narrow down what you should investigate.

Error 009?

Start with Fix 3 → Connected to Wi-Fi but No Internet.

Error 14.40 or 14.41?

Go to Fix 2 → Roku Finds Wi-Fi but Won’t Connect.

Error 016 or 017?

Go to Fix 4 → Weak or Dropping Wi-Fi.

As GlitchWise grows, error codes with enough search intent will also have their own dedicated troubleshooting guides.

Advanced Troubleshooting: If Roku Still Won’t Connect

If the relevant fix above hasn’t solved the problem, move to these tests.

Try the Other Wi-Fi Band

If your router and Roku support both 2.4GHz and 5GHz, try the other available network band.

Don’t assume that because your phone can connect to a particular 5GHz network, every Roku model can do the same.

Roku’s documentation notes that Wi-Fi capabilities vary by model and that some devices don’t support certain 5GHz DFS channels.

This is why we test the simple causes before changing router configuration.

Try Ethernet If Your Roku Supports It

Some Roku players and Roku TVs support a wired Ethernet connection directly, while some compatible players can use an Ethernet adapter.

If Roku works reliably through Ethernet but not Wi-Fi, that’s strong evidence that you should investigate the wireless connection, rather than the internet connection as a whole.

Test With a Mobile Hotspot

A mobile hotspot can also be useful as a temporary diagnostic test.

Try connecting the Roku to your phone’s hotspot.

If Roku connects to the hotspot: the Roku’s wireless connection is functioning, making your home Wi-Fi/router configuration the more likely area to investigate.

If Roku also fails on another known-working network: the Roku device itself deserves closer investigation.

Don’t use the hotspot for unnecessary streaming or updates because doing so can consume significant mobile data.

Check for a Roku Software Update

If you’ve managed to restore internet access but the Roku is still behaving unusually, check:

Settings → System → System update

Install an available update and test the connection again.

This is particularly worth doing if the Roku has been disconnected or unused for a long period.

Should You Factory Reset Your Roku?

Treat a factory reset as a last resort, not an early troubleshooting step.

A factory reset erases the Roku’s settings and requires you to set up the device again.

It also won’t fix:

  • an ISP outage;
  • incorrect Wi-Fi credentials;
  • weak Wi-Fi coverage;
  • incompatible router settings; or
  • a router that isn’t connected to the internet.

Consider a factory reset only after you’ve confirmed the network works, tried the relevant troubleshooting path above and ruled out the more likely causes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why won’t my Roku connect to Wi-Fi when my phone will?

If your phone works on the same Wi-Fi network, the internet connection itself is probably available. Check whether Roku can see the network, verify the Wi-Fi password and inspect the Roku’s connection status and signal strength.

If necessary, test the Roku on another known-working network to further isolate the problem.

Why does Roku say it’s connected but there is no internet?

Connecting to Wi-Fi means Roku can communicate with your local network. It doesn’t necessarily mean your router has a working connection to the internet.

Test the same Wi-Fi network on another device first.

What does Roku error 009 mean?

Roku error 009 indicates that the Roku cannot connect to the internet.

Start by checking whether other devices connected to the same router can access the internet. If they can’t, focus on the router/modem or internet service rather than resetting the Roku.

Why can’t my Roku find my 5GHz Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi capabilities vary between Roku models, and some Roku devices don’t support certain 5GHz channels.

If Roku can’t detect your 5GHz network, try an available 2.4GHz network before changing advanced router settings.

Will resetting my Roku fix Wi-Fi problems?

Sometimes, but it shouldn’t be your first response.

A factory reset won’t resolve an internet outage, incorrect Wi-Fi password or weak wireless signal, and you’ll need to set up the Roku again afterward.

Still Not Connecting?

One of the most useful final tests is whether the Roku can connect to a different known-working network.

Connects elsewhere: investigate your home Wi-Fi/router.

Fails on multiple working networks: investigate the Roku device itself and consider device-specific support.

For persistent hardware or model-specific issues, use Roku’s official support resources.
